Course Overview

With chemotherapy procedures now being a commonplace veterinary treatment option, it is of utmost importance that veterinary staff understand the safety measures that must be taken to protect staff when performing chemotherapy procedures in practice.

It is also vital to consider the implications for patients and their owners and families when patients are discharged into the home environment.

This course will explore the various aspects of safety and give participants the tools to create an outline safety policy for their place of work. You will also have the opportunity to discuss challenges and cases from practice with your tutor and fellow course participants.

The health and safety and COSHH regulations for common chemotherapy drugs and equipment used in practice
Specific health concerns for humans involved in the use and administration of cytotoxic drugs
Preparation for administration of chemotherapy to patients
Perivascular injection – avoidance and management
The use of PPE and other safety equipment
The need for practice-wide understanding of safety in use of chemotherapy, and how to implement this
The considerations when managing in-patients
Monitoring for adverse and iatrogenic effects
The limitations of safety procedures
Crisis management in chemotherapy safety
Client education and home-care implications
Discussion of cases from practice
