Theatre Management for the Surgical Nurse

Overview

The aim of effective theatre practice and management is to provide a sterile and safe environment in which to undertake surgery with consideration to reducing the risks to the patient and staff.

The course will explore and focus on the key factors in managing an efficient operating theatre, and will cover many topics from all aspects of theatre practice and management to help you to run a theatre effectively, and achieve guidelines set within the RCVS practice standards.

Participants will be able to share their knowledge base and protocols with a view to gaining an understanding of the areas of strength and weakness in the delivery and maintenance of their current practice protocols.

This will lead to discussions on how improvements can be made to achieve best practice standards within the remits of their own individual practices, and develop standard theatre operating procedures based upon this learning.

List planning/organisation/infection control

The principles of planning an operating list
Routine clean operations, emergency procedures, prevention of cross infection, dirty–non-sterile procedures
MRSA
Preparation of the surgical team
Instrument/kits organisation

Principles of instrument care and sterilisation

Stock selection and control

Choosing the best consumables, for example, drapes, swabs, blades, suture, attire.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, successful candidates will be able to:

Understand and apply the principles of operating theatre design including the use of furniture and equipment
Describe and apply the principles of instrument care and sterilisation, and have practical understanding of the management of instruments and materials during a surgical procedure
Explain appropriate dress and behaviour in the operating theatre, and understand the principles of assisting as a circulating and scrubbed nurse
