An Introduction to Veterinary Physiotherapy for the Geriatric Patient

Overview

Many of the geriatric patients that we see on a day-to-day basis are suffering from osteo-arthritis and mobility issues. There is so much that can be achieved in making these patients more comfortable and mobile by effective assessment, use of basic physiotherapy techniques and consideration and minor adaptations to the home environment.

During this online, tutor-supported course you will recap on the disease process of osteo-arthritis, learn how to objectively assess patients and look at some key areas in approaching, helping and continuing to support these patients.

Your learning from the course will enable you to create a patient plan for a patient of your choice that you can use to develop plans for future cases.

It will also empower you to set up basic physiotherapy clinics that will act as a perfect adjunct to senior clinics, and will help owners to help their pets as you will also be able to teach them how to utilise some of the most basic methods.

Syllabus

Topics covered on the course include:

Assessment of the geriatric patient, and gaining a thorough clinical history
Pain and mobility scoring
Basic massage and use of effleurage and petrissage
Passive range of movement exercises
Stretching, improving proprioception and balance
Strength building (with and without basic apparatus)
Heat therapy
Application and contra-indications for the techniques discussed on the course
Exercise advice for the geriatric patient
Environmental considerations that can be easily implemented to make life easier for the geriatric pet at home
Creating treatment plans for geriatric patients
When referral to a physiotherapist may be required

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, successful candidates will be able to:

Have an understanding of the pathophysiological changes that occur during the disease process of osteoarthritis
Be able to carry out and demonstrate simple techniques and exercises to help the geriatric patient, and appreciate changes that can be made to adapt the environment
Have a clear idea how to set up a clinic for their geriatric patients with mobility issues
